Tables
This database includes a single table, which is a mashup of data available from the U.S. Department of Education's Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS, 2020) and from the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education maintained by Indiana University's Center for Postsecondary Research (2021). Starting with the Carnegie Commission data set (the smaller, more restrictive list), relevant data fields from IPEDS have been merged in.
Instructions
Here are the principal views for this database:
- Each table in the left-hand column opens in summary view:
- By default, the table sorts by the first column, but you can click any column title to change the sort order
- That summary view shows only a few rows at a time, but use the pager tool to gain access to the rest
- This is also the view you will see after conducting a search
- Clicking the icon on the leftmost column of the summary table opens a detail view for the record.
- The "previous/next" links twill take you through any summary table, whether the full dataset or the result of a search
- You can conduct a "quick search" by one or two fields from the summary view, but you can also click the search button to open a full-featured search
- You can enter one or more fields, but don't overdetermine a search
- By default the search is conducted as a Boolean AND of the terms in any field but you can change this to OR in the dropdown
- FIelds with "equals," "starts with," or "contains" require a text entry. You may use Boolean AND or OR within these fields
- Fields with dropdown menus require you to select from prepopulated options
- Be sure to clear the search to get back to the full summary listing
- The state code is provided along with the state abbreviation to help you interpret the county field, where counties with the same name are distinguished by the state-county code whose first two digits are teh state code
- Congressional District numbers are not unique nationally and should be combined with a state selection to conduct a useful search
