Following are some tables that organize Census taxonomies in a way that is not easily available on the Census website. For access to each table, use the links or pull-down menu below. The following are the most interesting tables:

  • Place lists 26,000+ Census "place names" (with state name added for disambiguation) along with each one's place in the universe of Census taxonomies.
  • County similarly lists 3200+ counties (again with state names added) along with similar categorical information.
  • Don't forget to play with the search function for Place and County. Just fill in as many of the fields as you want and search (you can make it an AND or an OR boolean in the pulldown).
  • The remaining tables are mainly for quick searches of Census codes vs. names: CBSA; CSA; MetroDiv; and States.
  • In each data table, the "paper" icon in the leftmost column gives you a "detail" view. In the case of tables CBSA, CSA and County the readout also produces a list of other elements that invoke the respective listing. For example, a CBSA "detail" shows all counties in that CBSA; a CSA "detail" shows all CBSAs in that CSA; and a County "detail" shows all places in that county.
  • I made these tables for my own use from miscellaneous files on the Census website, and I provide no warranty of accuracy. These are for quick reference and insight only. If you find problems please feel free to let me know.
